Tuesday, April 27th, 2010Whats all the fuss about Omega-3?
Wednesday, April 14th, 2010In recent years there has been an ever increasing wealth of writing on Omega-3 citing benefits such as weight loss or brain health being bandied around it can be hard to separate fact and fiction.
What are fatty acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids contain EPA and DHA acids, are are naturally found in cold water oily fish such as mackerel, sardines and salmon. From these our bodies can make prostaglandins, and it is these that are so beneficial for our health.
You may be Omega-3 deficient if you have one or more of the following symptoms*:
- Excessive thirst, needing the loo frequently, dandruff, flaky brittle nails
- Skin problems such as eczema or dry/rough skin patches, dandruff
- Light sensitivity or poor night vision
- Joint pain or stiffness
- Mood swings, excessive worrying and anxiety
- Problems getting to sleep at night, or waking up in the morning
What are the benefits?
In 1979 two scientists working in Greenland noticed that Eskimos suffered very little from cardiac diseases, despite eating a high fat diet. Since this discovery scientists and researchers have studied fatty acids in particular Omega-3 and discovered a host of health benefits. These include:
1. Cardio Health – there are well established links between lessened cardio disease and a daily fish oil consumption.
2. Joint Health – Omega-3 can be extremely beneficial for those with degenerative problems such as Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis and offers a natural alternative to conventional NSAIDS treatment (for more information and help on arthritis see the Arthritis Research Campaign)
3. Brain Function – Did you know your brain is made up of over 60% fat, and most of this is Omega-3? Keep your memory shipshape with daily fish oils.
4. Mood Disorders – Mental health is an ever increasing issue today, though still shrouded in taboo and silence. There has been an established link between fatty acids and improved mood disorders, studies in the Arctic Circle and islands such as Taiwan have shown much lower cases in depression than elsewhere.
5. Skin Health – A lack of Omega-3 can be linked to dehydrated skin, eczema, skin healing problems, skin infections and other problems.
How do you get more Omega-3 into your diet?
- Oily fish – most people would struggle to fill the weekly quota of oily fish. Plus this can be dangerous as oily fish can be contaminated with mercury and other pesticides.
- Supplements
Why do we use Eskimo-3 products?
Sustainability
These days we are becoming more concerned as consumers and want to take better care of our environment. Eskimo-3 takes sustainability very seriously and sources all of their fish oil from strictly regulated fish stocks off the coast of Peru. These fish stocks are extremely plentiful and and rich, and Eskimo-3 works in conjunction with the Peruvian government to keep it that way.
Purity
You can be sure that Eskimo-3 is free from toxins, inparticular mercury and pesticides.
Stability
Many cheap fish oils on the market today smell fishy and cause fishy burps, this is because they are unstable and have become rancid. These rancid fishoils can actually cause more damage to your body. Eskimo-3 uses revolutionary technology to ensure that the pure fish oil stays stable and fresh for long periods of time. No more fishy breath!
