Welcome to our Blog

When the cat’s away…

..the mice will play. And play they did!

Last Thursday, all the gang here at Marylebone Physio were invited to get our glad rags on and join the team at the London London Orthopaedic Clinic for a very special evening of champagne, music and entertainment to celebrate their new premises on Wimpole Street. And boy did they get their glad rags on and party…

A gorgeous evening was had by all and huge thanks go to all at the London Orthopaedic, espeically Sarah and Sandra who worked so hard to organise it all. The night provided a wonderful opportunity for celebration for us too at Marylebone Physio as we were able to introduce to the newest member of our Clinic Angel team… ALLY (the blonde bombshell sandwiched here between Seb and Ash!)

Now for those of you who have had the delights of speaking to Ally in the clinic, you may have detected a familiar sounding accent buzzing round the room…that’s right patients, she’s a Shelia!! And as this is going to be her first winter away from Oz, she’s going to need all the warmth you can bring!

Steve Jobs, you have and will be an inspiration for a long time to come x

True story of a success tempered by humility and transparency. Great and awesome for a great man yet so down to earth.

Steve Jobs – You will be sorely missed x Rest in Peacex

Run to the Beat!

What a beautiful day it was on Sunday the 25th of September at the O2 Arena. Perfect for chilling in a park, with your shades on enjoying a picnic…. But this is not what we were doing this fine morning, No, Clinic Angel Eloise and I, chose to spend our Sunday pushing ourselves up some unexpected hills, with less training behind us than preferred!

At 9:45 the first purple shirted runners left their pens:

Eloise and I chose to leave IPods behind and though we could `chat’ and `soak up the atmosphere’…ERROR! In hindsight we see the error in our ways! After the 3rd ‘last trip’ to the bathrooms we made our way to your designated pen (the fastest one of course- ok so that’s a lie) The atmosphere was awesome at the start line, and the chat was in full force, then we hit hill No 1, banter and smiles was paused for only a moment then went back to our happy fresh outlook! What we didn’t release is that hill 1 was the least of our worries as the course continued to either be on a brief flat or incline for the next 13km. To be fair Greenwich is said to have some of the most beautiful views of London, which does require a bit of height!

Working in a Physio practice one would expect a certain level of `responsible athleticism’ if there is such a thing, however both Eloise and myself took to running 21km with niggling injuries, and a far less desirable level of fitness! Or maybe I just speak for myself there, as Eloise seemed to power through like it was no big deal, dragging me along, at the beginning – really grateful for her incredible spirit and drive, towards the end – not sure if I wanted to hug or punch her for dancing around me saying ‘Yes Robinson, come on, you can do it’!

After a last push from my partner in crime at the end we crossed the finish line in 1:59.00, which for a first half marathon for Eloise was an incredible achievement

You can see the story of our run, where we were strong (the beginning!), where we dug deep, (can’t say I remember that section!) and where we broke for home (the thought of frozen margaritas pushing us through!) here: Eloise and Ash

Looking back at the day, I’m not sure the races course was the most aesthetically pleasing, nor particularly interesting! But the last stretch through Greenwich Park, was beautiful and accompanied by some supporters doings some inspirational drumming, it seemed it worth it! As for the beat part of the `run to the beat’ when you were close enough to any of the 7 set up stages the music was great however, other than the portion of each 7 songs you were lucky enough to hear, it was a pretty quite race. Where the only beat audible was the sound of your own heart thumbing against your chests and your feet against the tarmac! Note to self – Always take your own music!!!

And huge congratulations to our patient Jodie Smallcombe who absolutely STORMED the run, completing the 13.1 mile course is an astonishing time of 1:43:31 – Incredible!

Needless to say, Jodie was feeling a little sore from Sunday (infact, I’m pretty sure I still saw some smoke rising from her trainers as she entered the clinic!) and treated herself to a well deserved massage.  Hope I was able to ease some of those aches and pains for you Jodie!

All in all had a great day, and was left feeling inspired to take on more challenges! Topped off by Mexican and frozen margaritas to celebrate!
Thank you to Nike for a well organised event and to Eloise for pushing my but through it!

THE ANNUAL ASTRO FUND WALK IN NORTH NORFOLK

THE ANNUAL ASTRO FUND WALK IN NORTH NORFOLK

I am taking part in a 10 mile walk along the very beautiful North Norfolk coast in aid of the Astro fund charity. It is taking place on the 8th October and I am walking with a bunch of old mates from school in memory of our dear friend Gemma who we sadly lost to a brain tumor last November. This is a fantastic charity which is affiliated to Brain Tumor Research. It is the only charity which focuses purely on low-grade gliomas, and every penny raised goes towards research projects and also in providing information and support to patients, friends and families living with this condition.

I know it is not a marathon or the 3 peaks, but it is a walk that the patients can take part in, and Gemma did it annually until she was unable to, so we are following her footsteps with many lovely memories to recount along the way.

I will post some pictures of the beautiful coast afterwards, but for now if you can spare a dime I guarantee it will go to a fantastic cause.

Seb’s Tour of Britain Charity ride

Last weekend I had the chance to hit the mean streets of London and participate in the last stage of the Tour of Britain charity cycle race. It was a great day out and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The course went past Big Ben, Number 10, Trafalgar square and down Embankment with a turnaround point at Tower Bridge. Lots of people filled the streets and fired us up along this awesome circuit. It just felt special to be in a race in the centre of London!!!

Big thanks to my friend Paul Levitt, a former physio colleague and cancer survivor, for organising our team kit and the entry for this event.

If you have a spare 10 pounds please donate to the Paul Levitt foundation now by clicking on the following donations link. http://www.paullevittfoundation.co.uk/

If you would like to do the same for the Prostate Cancer UK charity , I’d be most grateful.

Thanks a million,

Seb

Nothing like a bit of Inspiration on a Monday!

Feel inspired!

David Walliams’ Thames swim is yet another heroic demonstration of what the human body can do! With the right team, good preparation and a strong will everybody can accomplish things they thought they weren’t capable off.

Here are some inspirational videos to get your Monday started (Turn the speakers on!):

And here is one to make you think twice about not doing your exercises:

Enjoy,

Seb

The Likely Lads!

Happy Friday lovely readers of the blog!

Hope this finds you well and that you have had a wonderful week and are looking forward to fun and frolicks this weekend.

On Monday, with arms wide open but noses pinched (well, he had been in the stinky Thames after all!),  we welcomed back our beloved clinic director Chris McLean after his week away from the clinic assisting David Walliams with his Thames Swim. It was such a joy to have him back and the whole team grilled him in our weekly staff meeting on Tuesday about everything that had been occurring during the swim. Lots of stories were shared and and many ‘eerrgg’ and ‘oohhh’ sounds could be heard from the meeting as the words, chafing, neck sores and diarrhoea were echoed around – yum! But what Chris really emphasised to us was  just how incredibly strong and brave David had been. There were no cheeky filming tricks involved, when the camera’s stopped rolling David wasn’t whisked from one place to another to make up on miles. He genuinely fought like a trooper and completed quite a stunning feat. We applaud you David! And you too Chris! As we said in the meeting over cake and candles, we couldn’t be more proud.

David popped into the clinic on Tuesday for a session with Chris and we took the time to show him all our ‘Trunking’ shots and tell him how much our patients had raised so far for Sports Relief and he was over the moon. Having a particular fondness for a certain Miss Shirley Waxman – go Shirley, go! We also mentioned to him about our vow to get Seb, Simon and Vuko ‘Trunking’ in Mankini’s and readers of the blog…I haven’t let you down.

Take it away boys…

So there we have it treasured patients…our very own Likely Lads!

These STUNNING images wouldn’t have been possible without the huge generosity of so many of our wonderful patients and for providing us with bribery material for years to come, all of us at Marylebone Physio salute you!

David Did It!!

All of us here at Marylebone Physio would like to pass on our enormous congratulations to DAVID WALLIAMS who completed his Sport Relief Big Splash Challenge last night.

What a feat!

In just eight days, David conquered a gippy stomach, painful wetsuit rash and even rescued a drowning Labrador as he completed his epic swim along 140 miles of the river Thames.

We would like to thank all of our patients who have donated money to this wonderful cause and supported us with our ‘Tunking’ efforts. It’s your amazing support that kept David going and it’s not too late to sponsor him. Your money really will help to transform lives.

You can donate money at reception or go to the Sports Relief website at:

Day 5 – And we’re back on track!

We’re pleased to report that David is back on track! Hurrah! We’re pleased to report that David spent less time on the loo last night than in the previous two evenings, so could finally sleep a little. This led to him being a little more cheerful in the morning and swimming faster. But, this afternoon,  the pain in his body – especially shoulders-, got worse and at Sonning Lock, Chris was on hand for a  long and painful physio session.

It’s looking unlikely that David will finish the swim Monday as he is 10 miles behind. He hopes it will be Tuesday…as do we as Chris is due back in the clinic! We’ll keep you posted!

Back at Marylebone HQ, we’re continuing with our ‘Trunking’ fun -

Our gorgeous Pilates Instructor and Massage therapist,  Ash, giving it the old breaststroke!

And Clinic Angel Holly giving some flipper action whilst faxing!

Can you tell it’s Friday…!

Day 4 – Half Way Home!

Day 4 – And at the end of play today, David will be almost exactly half way through the swim – CONGRATULATIONS DAVID!!

But there’s still a long way to go…and as we mentioned yesterday, David contracted a nasty stomach bug and was suffering with severe vomiting and diarrhea all day which has meant that he’s struggled to keep up a good pace.

As well as falling behind schedule, David is also battling with his body. The vicious cycle of sickness means he is reluctant to eat but desperately needs too as he’s burning 8000 calories a day. So the fact that ‘Thames Tummy’ is wiping out his appetite is not good as he needs to refuel in order to continue with the challenge. In an attempt to compensate he is taking plenty of re hydration salts and of course, our very own Chris McLean is at hand to assess David at every stop.

But don’t just take our word for it, you can see for yourself here – as Sports Relief have been documenting David’s every twist and turn and Chris certainly features as more than just a walk on!
In fact, Chris needed just to borrow a pair of wings from one of the Clinic Angels for his starring role as Cupid as he brought David into the arms of his beautiful wife, Lara Stone

And as if playing Cupid wasn’t enough work for one day, Chris also took on the role of a Page 3 star in the Daily Express today…but you’ll be relieved know (or perhaps not?!),  there was no flesh on show and Chris was fully clothed – page 3 stunner!

That’s not to say we don’t think you have a cracking pair though Chris!!

Speaking of Page 3 Stunners and flesh on show…just a little reminder to all our patients…the more money you pop in our Sports Relief donation pot, the greater your chance is to see our Physio boys,  Simon, Seb and Vuko ‘Trunking’…IN A MANKINI!!

It’s all in your hands treasured patients! If we raise enough money for Sports Relief, you WILL be seeing Simon, Seb and Vuko wearing one of these bad boys

…and I will insist that they get some lunging action involved, don’t you worry!

Top Trunkers of the day include Rory Maguire and Neil Maurice – two wonderful patients who made very generous donations to our Sports Relief pot today – probably more for the sake of NOT seeing the boys in little less than dental floss! But either way,  thank you both so much. The money we raise for Sport Relief is spent by Comic Relief to reach poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged people, so the more cash we can raise together, the more lives they can transform.

In an interview for the Sports Relief home page, David said ‘When I heard the total raised had jumped to more than £200,000 it gave me a real boost, as do the thousands of people who have been turning out and cheering.’

So come on lovely patients, let’s dig deep, donate hard and keep David going.

He’s halfway home..let’s help get him all the way.
